Security and Safety Resolution
County: Pierce
WHEREAS, the security of our state is a top priority,
andWHEREAS, the ports of Seattle and Tacoma are among the busiest ports in North America, andWHEREAS, there are a total of 75 ports in the state of Washington,
andWHEREAS, an attack on a port could be crippling to our state’s economy,
andWHEREAS, loose port security could result in attacks on our nations interior,
andWHEREAS, drug trafficking is a problem in our state,
andWHEREAS, federal funding to port security across the nation has averaged nearly 80% less than requested in the past 5 years,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the state of Washington should increase funding towards port security and cargo inspections, including, but not limited to: hiring more security personnel at the ports, increasing funding for training of drug and bomb sniffing dogs, and technologies necessary to keep our ports safe.
