Environment Resolution
Lincoln County
WHEREAS planting trees remains one of the cheapest, most effective means of drawing excess CO2 from the atmosphere;
WHEREAS a single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs./year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings;
WHEREAS trees remove other gaseous pollutants by absorbing them with normal air components through the stomata in the leaf surface;
WHEREAS there is up to a 60% reduction in street level particulates with trees; and
WHEREAS a total of 300 trees can counter balance the amount of pollution one person produces in a lifetime;
WHEREAS trees can serve as a buffer between moving vehicles and pedestrians;
andWHEREAS planting tall trees along a street gives the illusion of the street being more narrow, therefore causing drivers to go slower;
WHEREAS trees shading houses reduce air conditioning needs up to 30%, therefore reducing the amount of fossil fuels burned to produce electricity;
WHEREAS fewer than half of Washington cities have laws regarding trees;
WHEREAS research shows that only 10% of Washington cities have tree inventories;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lincoln County KYG Party supports state funded urban forest development in cities across the state.
