Energy - Fossil Fuels
County: Island
WHEREAS, In 2005 86% of primary energy production in the world came from burning fossil fuels.
WHEREAS, Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources. They take millions of years to form and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being formed.
WHEREAS, The burning of fossil fuels produces around 6.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, but it is estimated that natural processes can only absorb about half of that amount so there is a net increase of 3.2 billion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year.
WHEREAS, Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming causing the average surface temperature of the Earth to rise in response.
WHEREAS, Climate scientists agree global warming will cause major, adverse effects. Those effects include: limiting of biodiversity, decreased snow-pack, increased global temperatures, and sea level rise.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That finding an alternative fuel source should be our top priority to maintain our way of life and to keep our planet healthy.
