Education Resolution
Kittitas County
By Melissa B. and Rachel G.
WHEREAS, there should be fewer number of high school graduation requirements. To comply with the No Child Left Behind Act is one thing, but to try to have students give up hope of graduating is another. The NCLB wants to ensure stronger accountability for student achievement and not discourage students from trying. Having so many things to comply with is often confusing and nerve wracking for students because they have to keep up with so many things.
WHEREAS, there should be different requirements for the WASL or other state standardized tests. Taking the test and requiring passing it is too much to expect for students, especially when other things are also expected. Only a percentage of students who took the WASL in 2006 passed the subjects focused on: two subjects with only 80%, one with 51% and the fourth with 35%. This is not helping the students further their education, especially when teachers are beginning to teach curriculum based from past WASL tests.
WHEREAS, there should be more vocation programs offered in high school. These programs would be essential for use later in life when students begin to make decisions of what they would like to do with their future. Vocation programs would also give students skills to use to reach their goals of going to college, a technical institute or job training. Programs that offer basic computer skills, agricultural skills or health related skills are becoming more important for our society, jobs and our lives.
WHEREAS, it should be easier to get into college. Everyone deserves the chance to further their education. The development of different skill levels would allow those who aren’t as skilled to learn more things at their rate of learning. Having to compete with those who are more skilled at one particular thing can be discouraging when trying to get into college takes more time than it really should.
WHEREAS, there should be more funds for higher education because this would allow those without funds in their family to attend college. They would also be earning an equal chance at advancing in a career. Many students work hard in high school and enter college with a good reputation but their family can’t pay for college and they can’t get enough scholarships. Often times families have just enough funds to put food on the table, and there isn’t enough to pay for college as well. Funds for higher education would allow many students to follow their dreams.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that it should be easier for students to go to high school and college.
