Education Resolution
Lincoln County
WHEREAS the United States of America was the leading country in education in 2000;
WHEREAS the United States is now ranked 18 out of 24 behind Finland, Australia, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore;
WHEREAS, according to Wikipedia, only 106,590 American students earned scholarships as opposed to 247, 500 foreign students to colleges in the United States.
WHEREAS Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (2003) results reveal that American students in the 4th grade go from average to below average by the 12th grade;
WHEREAS there has been a decrease in hours spent on academic subjects, and a resulting academic loss between school years;
WHEREAS there are added demands to the educational system including the need for feeding programs, child care, and extra-curricular activities;
WHEREAS one of the biggest demands on students is the preparation for and time spent taking the WASL consuming approximately 2-3 weeks of school time a year;
WHEREAS children in the United States spend approximately 12 weeks out of school due to educational breaks and only 175-185 days a year in school;
WHEREAS countries such as Japan have students in school 210 days a year and only have 6 weeks out of school during their school year;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lincoln County KYG Party recommends the Washington State Educational school year be extended to 200- 210 days a year.
