Education Resolution

Island County

Whereas, Based on statistics obtained through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, every school experiences a short fall in funding.Whereas, the average annual special education student cost is $16,921, and a regular students costs $7,552.
Whereas, the federal government is providing local school districts with just under 20 percent of its commitment rather than the 40 percent specified by the law.Whereas, The funding shortfalls result in a $10.6 billion shortfall for states and local school districts.
Whereas, research shows that smaller class sizes improve student learning.
Whereas, recent class size reduction efforts have helped, yet Washington class sizes remain the 4th largest in the US.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, We support an increase in funding for grades K-12 while the passage of a simple majority for levies should help this only addresses the issue of levies and not the state funding per capita for students in public education. We oppose continuing in the status quo. Funding for education in the state of Washington requires serious reform if we are to invest in our future generations.
