WHEREAS, The Educational Reform Law passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1993 required the state to create common learning standards for grades K-12; and
WHEREAS, the WASL was created to measure students learning standers for grades K-12; and
WHEREAS, the WASL is the only test provided to graduate High School; and
WHEREAS, WASL is considered a high stakes test, which means the scores determine whether a school receives money or the student can be allowed to advance to graduation; and
WHEREAS, The Washington Education Association states that nearly 90% of teachers polled believe that there is too much emphasis on student testing in the state; and
WHEREAS, nearly 58% of all 10th graders who took the WASL failed to pass at least one required section on the test; and
WHEREAS, There are around seven styles of learning abilities such as the following, print, aural, interactive, visual, hepatic, kinesthetic, and olfactory; and
WHEREAS, the WASL covers only two learning abilities: print and visual; and
WHEREAS, the WASL does not allow students to show the diversity in their abilities in other areas; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the WASL not be a graduation requirement and just be a test with other optional tests in its place that all students should be able to take.
