WHEREAS, Washington’s vast food industry is a key element of the State’s economy; andWHEREAS, Approximately 12% of the gross state product comes from the food and agriculture industry, especially in sales to China, Japan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia; andWHEREAS, Agriculture has an estimated annual economic impact of $32 billion and supports 160,000 jobs in rural communities;
and WHEREAS, Exports are critical to this industry and the state of Washington;
andWHEREAS, Washington is among the most trade dependent states in the U.S. and has tough competition at home and abroad;
andWHEREAS, Rising costs and trade barriers make it hard for farmers to make a living and the number of farmers in Washington are decreasing;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That farmers should get a better chance to make more money for their crops because they need to make a living and they are vital to the economic success of the state of Washington.
