Security and Safety Resolution

Yakima County

WHEREAS, gangs and their actions create a hostile living environment for the residents of our state;
andWHERAS, Yakima County is known throughout the state for its high amount incidents of gang activity;
andWHEREAS, gang activity causes tax payers large amounts of money;
andWHEREAS, it is estimated that each high risk juvenile prevented from adopting a life of crime could save the tax payers between $1.7 million and $2.3 million;
andWHEREAS, many older gang members pressure younger people into joining gangs; andNOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that any gang member, regardless of age, who is convicted of a gang related crime shall have his/her mandatory sentence lengthened by 50%.
